(AP)  A year after Michael Jackson’s death caused a worldwide outpouring of shock, tears and tributes, the anniversary of his passing was being marked Friday on a quieter scale, as fans remembered their fallen King of Pop with vigils, prayer and, of course, music.

The electric, enigmatic and troubled icon died on June 25, 2009, at age 50, as he was preparing for a series of comeback concerts in London. Dr. Conrad Murray is charged with involuntary manslaughter in Jackson’s death for administering the powerful anesthetic propofol to Jackson to help the pop star sleep.

At Jackson’s final resting place at Forest Lawn in Glendale. Calif., about 500 fans filed past barricades Friday to get close to the mausoleum where Jackson is interred. Some wept, while some carried bouquets; others were armed with cameras to document the moment.

Erick Dominguez, 37, a sales representative from Victorville, Calif., wore a black shirt with Jackson’s photo that read: “In Loving Memory.”

“He’s been my idol all my life since I can remember. I feel like I haven’t had closure,” he said, starting to weep from behind dark sunglasses.

Yugi Aoki, 33, of Tokyo, came with 13 other Japanese fans. They were all wearing sparkling gloves and fedora hats, one of Jackson’s signature looks. Aoki smiled as he described how Jackson influenced him: “Michael Jackson changed myself. We love his dancing and songs.”

Members of the Jackson family arrived at the cemetery Friday afternoon, and brother Tito Jackson shook the hands of a few waiting fans.

In Gary, Ind., Jackson’s hometown, hundreds of fans began gathering in the afternoon for a tribute at the family home; Jackson’s mother, Katherine, was in the city for the event.

Leonia Lowery, 69, a retiree from Chicago, stood against the fence hoping to catch a glimpse of the family matriarch.

“I’m very proud to be here and will be coming here every year because we love him,” she said as the King of Pop’s music played over loudspeakers set up outside his boyhood home.

In Harlem, pictures of Jackson hung on a wall outside New York’s Apollo Theater, where Jackson and his brothers won amateur night in the late 1960s. A sidewalk plaque honored the singer alongside such other legends as James Brown and Smokey Robinson.

Since the Apollo helped launch the Jackson 5, it has had a strong connection to the late singer. After Jackson’s death, it became the de facto gathering place for New York fans. It was an emotional though more low-key scene on Friday morning, as Jackson’s music blared from boom boxes and passing cars.

“We are really honored to have played a part in launching Michael’s musical career and to serve as a gathering place for people to come and celebrate his lifetime of achievement,” said Jonelle Procope, Apollo president and CEO.

Procope placed Jackson’s black hat and sequin glove, both from the theater’s collection, beside his plaque.

D.E. Cayard said he spent 68 days at the Apollo after Jackson’s death. He returned Friday, flying in from Miami, to present an artwork as tribute to Jackson.

“I want to be among the people that are telling the world that Michael is forever,” he said. “Michael is celebration.”

Elsewhere in Harlem, the AMC Magic Johnson Harlem 9 movie theater screened “This Is It,” the documentary about Jackson’s preparation for his London concerts, throughout the day. And the Rev. Al Sharpton was to lead a moment of silence in the afternoon.

In Gary, Ind., Jackson’s hometown, there was to be a tribute at the family home; city officials said they expected Jackson’s mother, Katherine Jackson, and his niece, Genevieve Jackson, to show up. Hundreds of fans were there by mid-day. Katherine Jackson was also to lend her support to a “Forever Michael” fan event in Beverly Hills, Calif., on Saturday.

In Japan, hundreds of fans met at Tokyo Tower to honor Jackson with a candlelight vigil, a gospel concert and more. Some got a chance to see a collection of his possessions, including costumes from his tours and even a 1967 Rolls-Royce Phantom that he used to drive around Los Angeles.

“I don’t know what to say. Seeing all his things makes it all come back to me,” said Yumiko Sasaki, a 48-year-old Tokyo officer worker who has been a Jackson fan since she was 12. “It makes me so sad to think that he is gone. He was wonderful.”

About 50 guests paid $1,100 each to sleep overnight at the Tokyo landmark, where they had catered food, watched a gospel choir, looked at Jackson memorabilia and danced to Michael Jackson’s music before observing a period of silence as the sun rose.

But not all memorials were to be somber. In France, Jackson weekend commemoration plans included a concert and tribute show. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland planned parties for the man who embodied dance music.

“They want to celebrate his life and music,” DJ Jon Quick said of the expected partygoers Friday night at New York’s club Taj, where he would play Jackson tunes.

On Twitter, “RIPMJ” was one of the most popular topics. Mariah Carey said she was marking the day by watching the video to “You Are Not Alone.”

“Love and prayers to MJ `King of Pop,’” Carey tweeted. “You will be remembered forever. We miss you.”

BON JOVI has been playing a different set list every night throughout their 12-show residency at London’s O2 Arena and that’s INTENTIONAL.

BON JOVI says he does that so the band keeps things fresh, like a baker.  (And just to be clear, that’s most definitely HIS odd analogy; not ours.)

He explains, quote, “Would you buy yesterday’s bread from a baker?  These set lists are all made fresh [and] delivered every night at 7:30 P.M.  The delivery men wait outside my door, patiently for its arrival.”

We heard recently that JENNIFER ANISTON is playing a sex-crazed dentist in a dark comedy called “Horrible Bosses”.  Well, I have some bad news to report:  Jennifer will NOT be showing any of her naughty parts.

Her rep says, quote, “The part is provocative and sexual, but also hysterically funny.

“There are no plans for her to go fully nude or topless, but the role does require an aggressive sexuality that many folks have not seen from Jennifer on screen before.”

In the 2008 movie “Taken”, LIAM NEESON put a little bad-assery into his image by playing a former spy who has to hurt and kill a lot of people to save his daughter from a European sex slavery ring.

The movie was a surprise hit, which means there’s a sequel in the works.  Neeson says he’s meeting with writer (slash) producer Luc Besson to come up with, quote, “a plot that would be believable.”

Obviously, that means this thing is nowhere near going into production, and thus we have no idea when it might come out.

Neeson is currently in theaters playing Hannibal in “The A-Team”.

British singer LEONA LEWIS, a former “X-Factor” winner you may know from her hit, “Bleeding Love,” survived a fall down an elevator shaft.

It happened during a show in England last Friday.  Apparently, an onstage elevator malfunctioned and Leona somehow fell through the opening.

She says, quote, “We have been having problems with the lift.  It had been going fine in rehearsals but then I had a bit of an accident and fell down the lift shaft.  It was quite scary.”  “Lift” is British for “elevator.”)

“I was lucky not to get injured.  Fortunately it happened during a blackout on set and didn’t affect the show and none of the audience saw anything.  I got a shock and had to be rescued.  I had to just get back up and carry on.”

Since there aren’t any details on this particular elevator, it’s difficult to gauge how LUCKY Leona was.  We don’t know how far she fell, or what she fell onto.

It probably wasn’t the traditional elevator shaft you’re thinking of  like the crazy one in the opening scene of “Speed” but still, a fall down any elevator shaft sounds pretty scary to me, even if it’s just a few feet.

This isn’t Leona Lewis’ first harrowing experience.  Back in October, some LUNATIC just walked up and PUNCHED her in the face during an autograph signing.  She was OK but that also had to be pretty frightening.

JOHN MAYER abruptly ended his European tour earlier this week because of a mystery illness and now we have an idea what might have happened.

A so-called “source close to John” tells HollywoodLife.com, quote, “John is recovering from a horrible food poisoning episode.  He got it from backstage catering, [and it] gave him such major diarrhea.”

It’s unknown who this source is, but this is a rare circumstance where a BATHROOM ATTENDANT could be legitimately be the “source close to John.”

John hasn’t commented beyond his initial statement that he’s returning to the U.S. and expects, quote, “a full recovery under a doctor’s supervision.”

Lilith Fair was scheduled to hit up Arizona on July 8th, but that show has been dropped from the tour.

No official explanation has been given, but the cancellation could have been for POLITICAL REASONS;  meaning that it could be a boycott over Arizona’s new and SLIGHTLY controversial immigration law.

A few weeks ago, GO-GO’S singer BELINDA CARLISLE, who IS on the tour,  posted a Facebook message saying, quote, “The Go-Go’s are encouraging Lilith to move this date to another state in protest of the new immigration law.

“We are NOT supporting the state government.  I don’t like mixing business and politics but I’m afraid I have to this time.”  But now that the show has been canceled, the Go-Go’s have NO IDEA why. 

They released a statement saying, quote, “At this time, The Go-Go’s have not been informed as to why the show was canceled.  We regret the loss of the date on our farewell tour as we know we have many devoted fans in Arizona.”

SARAH MCLACHLAN has admitted that ticket sales have been lukewarm, but it’s too much of a coincidence that it was the Arizona show that was axed.

But maybe it was a little of BOTH.  Maybe the Arizona venue didn’t have a secure perimeter, not enough security guards at the gate, and the Go-Go’s weren’t cool with them asking fans to prove they were ticket-holders.

ALICIA KEYS is indeed pregnant.  Reps for Alicia and her boyfriend, SWIZZ BEATZ, released a statement yesterday saying, quote, “[They] are expecting a baby and are engaged to be married in a private ceremony later this year.”  Alicia and Swizz, whose real name is Kasseem Dean, have been together since the fall of 2008.  This will be Alicia’s first marriage.  Swizz just got out of HIS first marriage earlier this month but he claims Alicia was not the cause of the breakup.

CHRISTINA AGUILERA scrapped her summer tour earlier this week and her people insisted that it was because she didn’t have enough time to prepare for it, NOT because of poor ticket sales.  Now, Christina has echoed that sentiment in an open letter to her fans, which was posted on her website.   She said, quote, “I made the decision to move my summer tour and I am truly sorry to those of you who had purchased tickets and have been disappointed by the news.  “Immediately after wrapping production on [my upcoming movie] ‘Burlesque’, I went directly back into the studio and then quickly started the promotional process for [my album] ‘Bionic’.

“With both the album press and film press, I am booked the entire summer and need time to focus on the work at hand.  “After reviewing the schedule with my team, I realized there was not enough time to put together and rehearse for a proper show, one that is at the caliber you expect from me or at the level I would present to my fans.  “In addition, my album has not even been released as yet, and I would like for you all to become familiar with the music before you hear it live on tour.  Again, I am sorry to have to move the dates but I promise to come see you when the time is right!”

There are two things here that don’t seem to add up.  One, “Bionic” is scheduled to drop on June 8th and the tour was set to run from July 15th in Uncasville, Connecticut, through August 19th in Irvine, California.

So unless Christina is planning on pushing the release date back (which we have not heard about yet) her fans would have had over a month to hear the album before the tour began.

And regarding her busy schedule with “album press” this summer, don’t you typically promote an album by touring?

The tour will be rescheduled for next year, assuming Christina has time for it.

A friend of MIKE MYERS was arrested Monday for attacking a photographer who was trying to take Mike’s picture.  And here’s the fun part:  He went after the guy with a HOCKEY STICK.  Both Mike and his friend, Mark McAdam, were walking the streets of Manhattan with hockey sticks when the photographer started taking pictures.  McAdam engaged in a little high-sticking action, and opened up a wound on the photographer’s face that required five stitches.  Myers fled the scene, while McAdam was booked on a felony assault charge.

As for why Mike Myers would be walking around with a hockey stick?  Well, he IS Canadian.)
